A Short Reflection on Gun Violence

by admin | posted in: Blog, Culture, Personal Growth, Relationships, Self Help, Self Reflection | 0

About Guns… I think the shootings we’ve seen the last few years have been very tragic and sad, and I mostly have not wanted to chime in on them because of the weight of the whole thing. When people’s lives, … Continued

A Message to Millennials

Millennials… I’ve got a message for Millennials. A lot of things are said about you guys—often. You seem to be the brunt of a lot of societal blame. Post after post I see the war generation and the baby boomers … Continued

The boy asked him, “how do I find what I’m looking for?” The old man replied, “Boy, you’ve heard it said that where your treasure is your heart will be also?” “Yes,” the boy replied. “Many, having misunderstood the meaning … Continued

Why Losing Your Temper is Unemotional

Did you know that people who often lose their temper are actually unemotional? I was once having a conversation with a guy about a fight he had recently had with his wife. It went something like this: “Ya know, she … Continued

Why We Suck At Communicating

by admin | posted in: Blog, Personal Growth, Relationships, Self Help, Self Reflection | 0

We often struggle to find the right words, the right time, the proper tone, maintain patience, listen with non-judgement and exude empathy toward the other. A communication breakdown results in irritation, blow ups, and sadly, a relationship that may be … Continued

I use to refinish floors for a living. And I think, sometimes, life refinishes us. Because of the feet and furniture and dirt and kids and sunlight and life happening on the floor, the finish would scratch and fade preventing … Continued

A Third Way To Communicate

by admin | posted in: Blog, Personal Growth, Relationships, Self Help, Self Reflection | 0

The two most prevalent forms of communication are passivity and aggression. Aggression is not always scary and loud. It can be very polite, quiet and self controlled. That’s why it can be confusing. The thing to notice about aggressors is: … Continued

Mind Reading | can we even read our own?

by admin | posted in: Blog, Daily Living, Personal Growth, Relationships, Self Help, Self Reflection | 0

We spend a lot of time thinking about and analyzing other peoples behavior; what they think, what they feel, why they did something. We imagine that if we discover their thoughts we would then know or understand their motives. But … Continued

A Subtle Benefit of Forgiveness

by admin | posted in: Blog, Daily Living, Personal Growth, Relationships, Religion & Spirituality, Self Help, Self Reflection | 0

Forgiveness does not promise to fix something, change someone, erase a memory, or…be easy. It does not promise the mathematics will line up: that you will be paid back, protected or guaranteed emotional restitution. No, forgiveness is not always justice … Continued

Episode two is now available! We continue to critique and deconstruct religion and spirituality, asking more and more questions about what it means to just be human. Not for the faint of heart, but good for the seeker, the curious, those on a journey. Enjoy!

I was recently interviewed on a podcast and the episode just came out last night. It’s a show created by a good friend of mine named Austin Fletcher. He’s a genuine and unique individual who explores religion and spirituality, un afraid to challenge tradition and doctrine, always making room for whatever journey people are on. Throughout the years we’ve challenged and encouraged one another, having conversations full of laughter and seriousness and questions and the occasional tear. Our talks go all day long and often late into the night, and on this occasion we hit record and you get to listen in 🙂 I share my story, my upbringing, my spiritual journey and more. We discuss religion and leaving the church and spend a ton of time deconstructing and stripping away at all the ways religion can become superstitious and unhelpful, getting in the way of living a meaningful life.

The aim of the three episodes we recorded is to connect with those who ask questions, who are unsettled, who feel doubtful or unfulfilled with their tradition, those who feel frustrated with religion and wonder if it is even the best way to navigate life. We put it all on the table, and I share views and ask questions that until this conversation I hadn’t even shared with Austin. So be warned, it is not a talk that is aimed to point people back toward faith or scripture. If anything, it makes room for setting religion aside and looking at it from new angles, giving you the permission to come to new conclusions and ideas, freeing you to just be human.

And I’ll close by saying that one of the gems about the episodes is that Austin and I don’t entirely agree on everything. So his willingness to give the stage and mic to me, to give his own time and energy to somewhat apposing ideas, and in the end to still share it with his audience, speaks volumes about his patience, openness, willingness and love for people, regardless of exactly where they stand on specific ideas or theories and beliefs. So thank you @atfletcherofficial for being so flexible and kind and encouraging to me and many others.

Took this a couple mornings ago. I love coffee-wet-cold mornings.
I love starting the day slow, reminding myself that the sun is not a slave-master as it rises, that my mind and body are meant for slower things than traffic and 9-5 and how much one can read or write or produce or earn each waking minute.
I sometimes start slow to fight the lie in my head that speed and income and results are the only metric to judge happiness and meaning by.
I sometimes start slow because I know who I am once I get going, and if I’m only ever going I’ll miss some small things: the birds, the boys, the minutes, the boring, idle, gentle calming non-rush of nature.
I start slow, and somehow it’s always worked. Even when my brain tells me I’m fucking it all up, and I better get going. Those are sometimes the biggest moments I slow down; to tell the day “No, I will not approach you, tackle you, conquer you, face you that way.”
I start slow because it at first feels against my nature, and the more I do it I find it’s what my nature longs for, I was just too busy and focused to listen, numbing myself with action and chaos and private accolades.
How do you start your day?
How do you manage your own work/play/purpose/creativity/duty/pleasure flow?
